Keep on practising with confidence

We constantly evaluate and adapt our products, services and member benefits to your evolving needs - so you can keep on practising with confidence and providing outstanding patient care.

Reflecting on challenges faced by physicians in 2020, second opinions – both giving and receiving – appear to be the source of some collegiate angst this year. Patients should not be discouraged from seeking a second opinion, and in fact it may be an important component when it comes to informed consent and managing patient expectations. Professional courtesy and good communication will benefit the patient and the practitioners involved in their care.

Physicians are often asked to sign forms, provide certification, consider fitness to driveassess capacity or comment on testamentary capacity. The revised Code of Conduct provides some guidance on writing reports and certificates, which includes “being honest and not misleading when writing reports and certificates and only signing documents you believe to be accurate” and “taking reasonable steps to verify the content before you sign a report or certificate and not omitting relevant information deliberately.”

Patient privacy and confidentiality, and requests for notes, are perennial issues for doctors in private practice. The OAIC’s Guide to Health Privacy is a must-read for all practitioners and their practice staff.

Now more than ever, patients will fire off a hasty and often vitriolic review if they are unhappy with the medical care they have received. The sensible course of action would be to raise the concern with the doctor, and discuss the issue rationally, but sometimes you are not afforded a right of reply. If you become aware of a negative review, don’t fire back an equally hasty response – take a deep breath and read our article on responding to negative reviews. Be mindful about anything you post on social media, and ensure your practice is compliant with the revised Ahpra advertising guidelines.
