Keep on practising with confidence

Looking back at some of the challenges anaesthetists faced in 2020, informed consent – both clinical and financial –  was a frequent source of complaints and queries from patients. Consent is a common issue for anaesthetists, and good documentation can often prevent a small issue from escalating into a lengthy and time-consuming medico-legal matter. Times are tough financially for many patients, so don’t get caught up dealing with arguments over out-of-pocket expenses. A robust financial consent process will save you and your staff a lot of grief in the long run.

Dental damage remains a challenge for anaesthetists. Poor dentition may seem like a small consideration when anaesthetising a patient with multiple co-morbidities, but a failure to check your patient’s teeth, or warn of the risk of dental damage, can be a false economy when the patient wakes up with a broken tooth or a missing crown. Good notes can be the difference between a known complication and a claim for damages.

We continue to see look alike-sound alike drug errors such as metoclopramide vs metaraminol, and this year we provided advice on how to reduce the risk of this happening to your patients.

And last but not least, we come to the stresses and strains of working in a team environment – including decisions to anaesthetise high-risk patients, and the management of post-operative complications. It remains a challenge to balance the expectations of the patient, the treating surgeon, and your own, good communication and conflict resolution is essential for good medical care.
