Embracing the privilege of caring for patients: The Baumwols

Dr Jay Baumwol credits much of his professional approach to medicine to the example set by his father. From an early age, he absorbed the importance of working hard and excelling in his career, lessons reinforced by his father’s dedication and determination to put himself through medical school despite modest beginnings. This enduring relationship has not only shaped Jay’s medical work ethic but also deepened his appreciation of the opportunities afforded to him by his father’s hard work and encouragement. For Jay, having his father as both a role model and mentor have been a source of good fortune, strengthening his practice of medicine and his outlook on life.

Associate Professor Max Baumwol, a Member for almost 50 years, reflects on a career shaped by medicine and more than 30 years of involvement with MDA National. From his early days as a student supported by us, through roles on the Board (as Treasurer and Chairman of Finance), Max recalls his contribution to the Cases Committee as the experience he has enjoyed the most.

"What I miss most is the collegiality, the friendship, the meetings. Even though some of the problems could be controversial and we could argue about points, at the end of the day we all respected each other."

Family in Medicine

Max is proud of MDA National’s record of never making a call on its Members in over 100 years, and of the trusted medico-legal guidance it has provided to countless doctors. He also reflects on the deeper rewards of a life in medicine, from the gratitude of patients, the satisfaction of making a difference, to the camaraderie built with colleagues. Long hours and challenging cases were made worthwhile by knowing he was helping people and supported by an organisation that stood by him.

As he steps into retirement as of December 2025, Max hopes Jay and future generations of doctors find the same satisfaction. His advice is to enjoy what you do, embrace the privilege of caring for patients, and lean on the support and mentorship that makes the profession both sustainable and deeply rewarding.
