Hands-on medicine and personalised mentorship: Dr Dror Maor & Shev Dias
When Dr Dror Maor speaks about medicine, he emulates the precision of an orthopaedic surgeon and the humility of someone who still finds meaning in every patient interaction. For Dror, the road to orthopaedics has been defined by a commitment to each patient, even when carrying a wealth of experience. “The night before, I still go through the notes. I think about what’s unique about this operation and what I can do to get the best outcome.”
This mindset has become part of the legacy Dror passes on to his mentees, including Shev Dias, a final year medical student who recently completed a placement with him. Dror speaks warmly of Shev’s clinical strengths – from his research efforts to his patient interactions. “He is bubbly and fun but he also knows when to be serious. His dedication to the profession has been obvious to everyone around him.”
When deciding which career pathway to follow, Shev found clarity early on. His clinical placements and passion for elite sports confirmed what he already suspected: orthopaedics aligned with the way he wanted to practise medicine. Dror also picked orthopaedic surgery as a career through his passion for elite sports, having worked with professional athletes from the Chelsea Football Club and the Australian Wallabies.

"We've all had those moments when you question a decision or wonder if you could have done something differently. Having a team that understands what it's like to be a doctor, and that's there to guide you, is invaluable.", says Dror
For Shev, learning under Dror’s guidance has been a defining experience. “I’ve had the privilege of seeing how excellence is practiced, not just taught,” he says.
Speaking about the importance of mentorship, Dror recalls a mentor who supported him through becoming a successful orthopaedic surgeon: Dr Sol Levitt, a family friend and the first chairman of MDA National. “Sol once told me: in your career, there’ll always be three patients that keep you up at night. You’ll always wonder if you could have done something differently – and when one gets better, there’ll be another. And he was 100% right. Because we care.”
A shared trust in MDA National
