MDA National, has launched a Cyber Risk Program for 2018/19 comprising a suite of education and resources to support medical practices and doctors, as well as complimentary Cyber Risk Cover to protect MDA National medical practice policyholders against the effects of cyberattacks.

MDA National President, Dr Rod Moore, said cyber risk is a serious issue for Australian medical practices further increased by the adoption of electronic health records and billing systems, and the Federal Government’s new mandatory privacy breach obligations which took effect on 22 February 2018.

“The unintended disclosure or destruction of confidential information, patient contact details and identifiers is a very real threat to Australian medical practices which can result in privacy breaches as well as financial loss, business disruption and reputational damage,” Dr Moore said.

Ahead of this evolving risk, MDA National is curating a series of case studies, articles and blogs from global cyber experts about cyber risk, and providing education for medical practices and doctors on mitigating cyber risk. In addition, MDA National has purchased a group cyber risk insurance policy through Jardine Lloyd Thompson Pty Ltd which is underwritten by Chubb Insurance Australia Limited, for MDA National Insurance practice policyholders. This cover is complimentary to existing and new MDA National practice policyholders.

CEO, Mr Ian Anderson, said MDA National’s Cyber Risk Program will help equip MDA National Members and practice policyholders to better understand and manage cyber risk. MDA National practice policyholders under the Cyber Risk Policy will also be supported by third party 24 hour cyber crisis support, cover up to $100,000 in the aggregate* for incident response expenses and business interruption protection, subject to the terms of the policy.

“The Cyber Risk Program reflects the evolution of MDA National’s support for doctor Members’ practices in an increasingly digital environment,” he said. “The Cyber Risk Cover provides a strong base which our Practice Policyholders can augment with any other cyber protection they may wish to put in place.”
