MDA National Limited has appointed Dr Michael Gannon to fill a casual vacancy on its Mutual Board, effective 15 June 2018.
Chairman, Dr Rod Moore, said Dr Gannon’s drive and influence further elevates the calibre of MDA National’s Mutual Board in representing more than 52,000 doctors, medical students and insureds.
“Dr Gannon is a renowned Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and an outstanding advocate for the medical profession,” Dr Moore said. “His long term association with MDA National and his medico-political acumen further strengthens an already strong Board, at a time when key issues such as mandatory reporting, the government’s first principles review of medical indemnity, and implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme are at large.”
Dr Gannon recently completed a two year term as national President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and made direct representations to the Federal Government on the Medical Indemnity Insurance Review which aimed to fundamentally alter the direction of the review. He has also been successful in raising the importance of a safe and secure medical indemnity system to the highest level in detailed discussions with Health Minister, Hon Greg Hunt MP.
Dr Gannon said he is delighted with the appointment and looks forward to further supporting the medical profession in his new role as a director on the MDA National Mutual Board.
“I first joined MDA National as an Intern in 1995, so I understand the importance of the trusted role that a medical defence organisation plays in a doctor’s career. I have enjoyed my contribution to MDA National’s Cases Committee over the past 5 years and look forward to the new responsibilities of sitting on the Board.”
