Your elective – your dream
  • Are you after an adventure or a cultural experience?
  • Do you find humanitarian work fulfilling?
  • Do you want experience in a particular field of medicine?

Support from day one

There’s a lot to consider and organise. Realising your dream elective requires meticulous planning which many medical students find daunting amid study commitments and everyday life. For this reason, MDA National provides our student Members with extensive medical indemnity to protect you during your electives. Plus our partnership with The Electives Network (TEN) gives you free access to electives information, profiles and planning resources to help you identify and create your dream elective.

As our Member, you also have access to our Member Online Services for more information and resources to help plan your elective.

How TEN can help you

MDA National student Members receive complimentary cover via our Professional Indemnity Insurance Policy.* Our cover ensures that you receive the same extensive protection overseas (excluding the USA)^ during your elective, as you do while here in Australia. This is imperative to ensure you’re supported and protected in the event that a medico-legal issue, complaint or complication arises during your elective.

  • 24 hour medico-legal advice.
  • Access to independent legal representation.
  • Up to $20 million protection in the aggregate for all claims made under the policy. This includes civil liability claims arising from Good Samaritan acts worldwide and unintended breaches of privacy.
  • Sublimit of $1 million (in the aggregate) with a maximum of $500,000 for any one matter to cover your legal costs and costs arising out of:
  • investigations and inquiries, including disciplinary or administrative proceedings by a professional registration authority, professional body, health services authority, medical tribunal, Royal Commission, Coroner’s Court, criminal court, Australian Information Commissioner, Anti-Discrimination Board or university that you attend
  • allegations of criminal or sexual misconduct*
  • $50,000 for Communicable Disease Cover payable as a lump sum one-time payment.

* Subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Indemnity Insurance Policy and Underwriting approval.

What our Members say

TEN was a fantastic place to find lots of elective options and see how other students enjoyed their placements. It’s definitely a must-use resource for elective planning!
Emma Browne

I found TEN very useful. The thought of organising an elective is very challenging as I had no idea where to start. TEN gave me great ideas. I knew I wanted to go to the UK so I loved the map features. I wanted to go to Cambridge and what I loved about TEN was the access to previous students’ comments on the placement. It's really reassuring to see that other students have done the placement you want to do and that they had a great time.
Fiona Menz

I found TEN an essential resource in planning and researching my elective. The information is succinct and the staff were friendly and promptly replied to any questions I had. I would recommend it to all students.
