Cognitive Institute Workshops
MDA National presents the Cognitive Institute series of risk management workshops. The workshops, presented by doctors for doctors, highlight the relevance and importance of communication skills in both the prevention and management of adverse events and patient dissatisfaction.
Workshop Outline
Mastering Shared Decision Making
Patient autonomy, informed consent and the appropriate healthcare decisions enhance the doctor-patient relationships and reduce the doctor’s risk of a complaint or claim. Regulatory and community expectations in this area are now high. The Mastering Shared Decision Making workshop teaches clinicians how to effectively facilitate patient decision making, so they can find the middle ground between the paternalistic "doctor knows best" and the "consumerist" model.
Mastering Difficult Patient Interactions
Working in healthcare often means having to deal with very challenging and difficult patient interactions. Many doctors report that difficult patient interactions are one of their biggest workplace challenges and sources of stress. The Mastering Difficult Patient Interactions workshop teaches proven communication and negotiation skills that allow doctors to respond effectively in these situations.
Mastering Work/Life Balance
Many doctors struggle to get the work-life balance right. Juggling the needs of a family, finding time for leisure and keeping enthusiasm for work can be a challenge when the demands from work are high, on-call rosters place an onerous burden on lifestyle, and workforce shortages place enormous pressures to maintain services for patients in need. The Mastering Work-Life Balance workshop identifies the challenges that clinicians face in getting this balance right.
All workshops attract CME/CPD points.
