First Year Med Students Get Oriented

MDA National's state liaison managers have been busy meeting a record number of medical students all around the country starting their journey into the medical profession.

See below how your state liaison manager was involved in student orientation week!!

Queensland

Med 1 Student Orientation in Qld kicked off with a very busy day on Friday 23 January with UQ welcoming its 440 new med 1 students, the largest cohort of first years yet. UQ now has 1,500 students in their medical school.

Griffith was next and they welcomed 150 first years. It was a fun and informative day that concluded with O'Day drinks at the Courthouse Hotel.

In the far north, James Cook Uni held their Orientation sign-on BBQ on 26 February at the Townsville Campus. JCU also welcomed their largest cohort of med 1's to date with 180 new students.

Bond's Orientation is yet to come, with a camp planned for 16 May.

Victoria/Tasmania

In Victoria, Student Orientations' were in full swing during the month of February. Deakin University kicked off the first orientation for the year with 130 1st year students. Subway sandwiches were the food of choice. and a fabulous time had, meeting and greeting all. Monash University's MedFest was a huge day with approximately 250 1st first year students. The day was filled with music, good food and plenty of time for socialising.

Due to the post grad med course commencing at Melbourne University, a total of 10 1st year students commenced their Med School journey at the beginning of the calendar year. Papa Joes provided great pizza and a wonderful night was had.

Across the Tasman, the UTAS Orientation was held at the university cricket grounds. A delicious BBQ was provided and MDA National had a great time meeting new members.

New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory

First up for NSW was the University Of Notre Dame with their second year of student intake. It was a busy day with a BBQ sausage sizzle at their new campus in Darlinghurst. The students were eager to learn about medical indemnity and grab a water bottle and stress apple! The University of Wollongong was next also taking its second intake of students this year. Along with a pizza lunch we met the eager students, before they headed off to MedCamp. ANU was a cold day in Canberra and once again over pizzas, the students had a chance to visit our stand and hear about medical indemnity and MDA National. We visited the students from the University of New England in Armidale and University of Newcastle next at both their first year orientations and their MedCamps. All of the students were keen to hear about us and were enthusiastic about the show bags with the free goodies inside! UNSW and UWS are last for us to visit in mid-March, and we are meeting both groups of students at their MedCamps in Appin and Narrabeen. We wish all of the first year students a bright medical student career and we look forward to seeing them over the coming years!

South Australia

Adelaide has had its fair share of heat this season, so it was a fairly good bet that icecream would be flavour of the day at the Flinders Medical School Student Orientation on Tuesday 10th February. Flinders University Rural Health Alliance along with MDA National hosted an ice cream extravaganza (well ok it was just ice cream...) for new students to introduce them to the delights of FURHS and MDA National and to give them a taste for both organisations and to find out what we all had to offer.

As the hardworking committee members from FURHS doled out the ice cream and FURHS membership information, visitors to the MDA National stand got to choose from a tableful of fun ice cream toppings, of course all in MDA colours of green and white! Think lime jelly crystals and desiccated coconut with mint M&M's thrown in for good measure! Yum!!! We were very popular and it gave first year students a great opportunity to hear about what we do and why you might need us!

Western Australia

In the West a day is not quite enough to celebrate orientation so both UWA and Notre Dame head away for the weekend. Notre Dame had 60 new students who enjoyed a weekend of festivities that included abseiling, education & treasure hunts. Whilst UWA's new cohort set off bush for a team building weekend.
