Autumn 2007

And they're off and racing. The Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA) National Charity Drive has begun.

Melbourne and Monash Bed Push

The Melbourne and Monash Bed Push marked the start of AMSA's National Charity Drive, the start of an effort which will no doubt escalate in the months to come. On Friday 23 February, over 80 Melbash (Melbourne and Monash) Medical Students pushed a Hospital Bed through the streets of Melbourne to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Inspired by previous Bed Push efforts from the other side of the Nullarbor, students pushed Melbourne University's A/Prof Steve Trumble for two and a half hours to raise over $2500. Cheering and clapping every high-donor (think high-roller but for charity) and chanting some tamer versions of the Convention songs, it was a fantastic way to finish off O'Week at the two universities. This year AMSA is placing a large focus on community involvement and has created the position of Community Liaison Officer to do so. Many medical students are already extremely involved within their own communities and AMSA wants to recognise these students' efforts as well as encourage other medical students to become involved too. The National Charity Drive aims to identify and acknowledge Medical Students' Societies contributions to different charities. Up until Convention, AMSA will be tallying up and displaying all charity efforts - both for monetary and other contributions - on the AMSA Website. At Convention there will be a prize for the most innovative charity idea as part of the drive.

If you have any questions about the National Charity Drive or any other AMSA Community Initiatives then please send an email to community@amsa.org.au or speak to your AMSA Rep - we would love to have you involved!
