As you graduate from medical school and become an intern, you will need to think about your medical indemnity needs and carefully consider your options. Many interns and junior doctors believe that the indemnity provided by their hospital is enough to ensure that they are protected in all circumstances. In reality, hospital indemnity may not provide you with your own legal advice and representation before a hospital or Medical Board investigation, hearing, disciplinary process or Coroner's court. With our extensive industry experience and financial stability, MDA National Insurance is able to offer interns a comprehensive and flexible Professional Indemnity Insurance Policy, which will cover you for up to 18 months. Please note that if you are a student Member of MDA National, you still have to apply for a Professional Indemnity Insurance Policy for your intern year as you will not automatically be rolled over from a student Member to an intern Member upon graduation.

The Professional Indemnity Insurance Policy provides you with:

  • Your own legal representation and medico-legal advisor.
  • Legal costs and assistance with Medical board investigations and proceedings.
  • Legal costs and assistance with Hospital investigations and disciplinary proceedings.
  • Legal costs and assistance at Coronial Inquiries.
  • Legal costs and assistance before Professional Services Review Committee.
  • Whistle-blower protection - Cover against defamation and civil claims in the event you report a colleague to a Hospital Medical Advisory Committee or Registration Board.
  • Legal costs and assistance with allegations (of which you are cleared) of sexual misconduct and criminal activity which arise from you providing medical services.
  • Cover for Good Samaritan Acts.
  • Access to the medico-legal advice line, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
  • Access to a range of risk management resources, including First Defence, our magazine designed specifically for junior doctors.

The price for a Professional Indemnity Insurance Policy is $20, including taxes, and this can provide you with up to 18 months of cover. If you join MDA National as an intern Member you will receive a complimentary copy of the AMH Drug Companion (Emergency and Primary Care), valued at $50.
