MDA National to Indemnify Members Administering H1N1 Vaccine

MDA National Insurance has confirmed that its insured medical practitioner Members will be covered for administering vaccine under the auspices of the Commonwealth Government’s proposed Pandemic (H1N1) Vaccination Program.

MDA National announced its intention to indemnify its insured Members during a series of media interviews on Friday 28 August 09 which coincided with the MIIAA Forum held in Sydney.

MDA National, along with other medical indemnity insurers, had put their position as being that the issue was under consideration as the full facts and circumstances of the Program were gathered and considered. This process included discussions within the Medical Indemnity Industry Association (MIIAA) and the Insurance Council, as well as discussions with the Commonwealth Government.

MDA National President Julian Rait said the decision was based on their satisfaction that the Commonwealth Government will be providing appropriate advice and guidelines to medical practitioners about the Program, including consent forms and guidelines on the use of multi-dose vials.

“The medical indemnity issues arising from the proposed Pandemic (H1N1) Vaccination Program have been complex and have required detailed investigation and assessment.

We are pleased to have been able to work with the Commonwealth Government in a supportive and cooperative fashion to ensure that there are no roadblocks in the rollout of this important program.”

Further submissions are being made on behalf of the medical indemnity insurers, including MDA National, to the Commonwealth Government based on the pressing need for a decision on this Pandemic (H1N1) Vaccination Program, and the need for MDA National’s Members to receive early assurance of our continued support and protection.
