H1N1 Consent Form not a Precondition for Cover

MDA National Insurance has confirmed that it does not require its Members to obtain a completed Department of Health and Ageing Pandemic (H1N1) Influenza Vaccine Consent Form from their patients before administering the swine flu vaccine in order to be indemnified.

MDA National last week communicated with its Members that their cover under the MDA National Insurance Professional Indemnity Policy will extend to the administration of the Pandemic (H1N1) Influenza Vaccine (Panvax) in accordance with the terms and conditions of the policy.

There has been a suggestion however that insurers would require their General Practitioner members to obtain written consent from patients before administering the swine flu vaccine.

MDA National Medico-Legal Manager, Dr Sara Bird said MDA National is pleased that the Commonwealth Government will now only release the vaccine once it has been TGA approved.

“While MDA National recommends the use of the Department of Health and Ageing Pandemic (H1N1) Influenza Vaccine Consent Form, its use will not be a precondition to our Members being entitled to indemnity under their policy.

We also recommend that our Members are aware of, and comply with, the guidelines for the use of multi-dose vials.”

MDA National recommends its Members visit the Department of Health and Ageing website www.healthemergency.gov.au for further information about the Pandemic (H1N1) Vaccination program and multi-dose vials.
