  A/Prof Julian Rait

Associate Professor Julian Rait MBBS (Melb), FRACS, FRANZCO, FAICD


President

An Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Melbourne, A/Prof Rait is a fellow of RACS, RANZCO and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He joined Council in June 2004 and has held positions as Vice President (2007- Nov 2008) and President (Nov 2008 to current). 

He currently serves as the representative of the Medical Indemnity Industry Association of Australia on the competence and performance working party of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
 Dr Beres C A Wenck

Dr Beres C A Wenck MBBS (Qld), FAMA


Vice President

Dr Wenck is a General Practitioner in Brisbane. She was elected to Council in September 2004.

She is a Visiting GP to Royal Children’s Hospital Brisbane and Principal Medical Director, Family Care Medical Services, the largest Medical Deputising Service in Australia. She was President of AMA Queensland 1999-2000.

She is the Chair of the National Standing Committee of the RACGP for GP Advocacy and Support, and has two Ministerial nominations as a Board Member of Q. Comp and Health Promotion Queensland. In 2009 she was commissioned to author a paper for the Health and Hospital Reform Commission titled General Practice in 2020.

She was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the RACGP in 2009.

 A/Prof Max Baumwol

Associate Professor Max Baumwol MBBS (Perth), FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Edin), FRACS


Chair of Finance

A/Prof Baumwol, a General Surgeon, has been a Councillor since 1993 and has held the positions of Secretary (1997) and Treasurer (1998-2001).

He also is attached to the University of WA Surgical Teaching Unit and is an examiner for the University of WA MBBS.

A/Prof Baumwol also is an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

 Dr Fiona A Bettenay

Dr Fiona A Bettenay MBBS (Hons) (WA), FRANZCR, GAICD


Dr Bettenay is a Radiologist who was elected to Council in 1996. Dr Bettenay has held the position of Secretary (1998- 1999) and Vice President (2000-2001).

She also is an executive of the WA branch of the RANZCR. Dr Bettenay is also the Acting Head of Department of Diagnostic Imaging Services at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children.

 Dr Reg Bullen

Dr Reg Bullen FRACGP, FRNZCGP


Dr Bullen graduated in 1976 from UWA and became a vocationally registered GP, holding both FRACGP and FRNZCGP. He has worked in the RAAF, NT Aerial Medical Service and general practice in WA, Victoria, NT and NZ. He has had exposure to corporate medicine in NZ and was been Chairman of the "GP Down South" Division of General Practice (1999-2003). He was elected to MDAWA Council in 2001 and served on a number of committees until 2004 when he commenced work as a Medico-Legal Manager in MDA National’s Perth office. He ceased that role in 2006.

 Dr Rosanna Capolingua

Associate Professor Rosanna Capolingua MBBS


Associate Professor Capolingua is a General Practitioner and was elected to Council in 2005. During her career, she has been actively involved with the Medical Profession through a number of organisations including the Australian Medical Association (AMA), both at State and Federal Level. A/Prof Capolingua served as Federal President of the AMA in 2008-9, State AMA(WA) President in 1998-2000 and served on the Executive of the Federal AMA for six years, having chaired the Federal AMA’s Ethics and Medico Legal Committee, the Finance Committee and the Taskforce on Indigenous Health. A/Prof Capolingua was also Chair of the Australian Medical Publishing Company. She has been a member of 2 standing committees of the NH&MRC being the Human Genetics Advisory Committee and the Australian Health Ethics Committee.

Associate Professor Capolingua has served on the Medical Board of WA, Professional Services Review Committee and the Board of MercyCare. Her current appointments include; the Board of Healthway, board positions St John of God Healthcare Australia, the UWA Raine Foundation, the Board of Governors of the University of Notre Dame Australia and alternate director for the Board of MDANI. She sits on the MAC and is Director of Doctor Liaison of SJOG Hospital Subiaco, and is the Medical Director of the AMA(WA) Foundation. She is the practice principle and owner of a General Practice which teaches medical students and GP Registrars.

 Dr David Gilpin

Dr David Gilpin MBBS (Hons), FRACS


Dr Gilpin is an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Queensland with a sole focus of practice in upper limb surgery. He was appointed to Council in March 2010.

Dr Gilpin has been in practice for 19 years, during which time he has been involved in the active promotion of upper limb surgery having served as both President of the Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia and more recently on the Board of Hand Surgery.

He is also involved in teaching, research and assisting in the ongoing education of both the medical profession and paramedical groups including lecturing at university.

His appointments with MDA National include Queensland Chair of the President’s Medical Liaison Council and Committee Member of the Underwriting Committee. He was also a Member of the Queensland Advisory Committee (2003 -2009).

 Clinical Prof Guy van Hazel

Dr van Hazel, an Oncologist, was elected to Council in 1997. He has been actively involved with the Cases (Western/Central) Committee for a number of years.

 

 Dr Andrew J Miller

Dr Andrew J Miller MBBS, LLB (Hons), FANZCA, FACLM


Dr Miller is an Anaesthetist in active private practice in Perth. He was first elected to Council of MDA National in 1998.

His appointments with MDA National have included Secretary (2000- 2001), Vice President (2001- 2004), President (2004-2005), Director, Medical Indemnity Services (2001-2005) and Alternate Director, MDA National Insurance (2003-2004).

Dr Miller is Chairman and the MDA National representative on the Board of the Medical Indemnity Industry Association of Australia (MIIAA). He serves on the combined Working Party on Risk Management between MIIAA, AMA and CPMC. Dr Miller is also Deputy Chairman of ASA WA and a State Executive Councillor of AMA WA.

 Dr Rod Moore

Dr Rod Moore MBBS (WA) Grad Dip Sp Med (UNSW), GAICD


Dr Moore is a founding Principal of two multi-disciplinary Sports Medicine Clinics in Perth. He was elected to Council in 1998 and as Vice President in November 2004.

Dr Moore has had a long involvement with Australian Rules Football. He has been Team Doctor for the West Coast Eagles since they entered the National Competition in 1987.

He also is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Dr Moore is a Committee Member of the WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry Primary Health Care Committee.

 Dr Robyn Napier

Dr Robyn Napier MBBS (Sydney) FAMA


Dr Napier is a General Practitioner in Sydney. She joined the MDA National Council in January 2005. Dr Napier is also the AMA (NSW) Medical Secretary and Medical Director, a member of the NSW Medical Board and represents the profession on the BEACH Research Advisory Committee (University of Sydney), Medicines Australia Monitoring Committee, Area of Need Advisory Committee (NSW), and numerous other committees and is a Deputy Director of Professional Services Review.
  A/Prof David O. Watson

Associate Professor David O. Watson MBBS (Sydney), FRACP


A/Prof Watson is a Consultant Physician with an interest in Medical Oncology, Medical Education and in the problems of patients with spinal injuries. He graduated from Sydney University in 1968 and has practiced in Internal Medicine since 1972. He joined Council in November 1986 and has held positions of Treasurer (1990-1993), Vice President (1994-1997) and President (1998-2004). Following the AGM in 2005 he resumed the Chair as President. He stood down from the Presidency at the AGM in November 2008.

A/Prof Watson holds a position on the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame Australia in Fremantle and is Clinical Dean at St. John of God Hospital, Subiaco, the hospital he has served since entering private practice in 1977. He has also served as an AMA Federal Councillor, AMA WA State President and member of the Board of HBF, WA’s largest Health insurer.
